locations for (The) Last Year

I want to share some of the locations in Scotland and the US which I enjoyed writing about in (The) Last Year.  For a start, here’s a view of the Scaur Water, where John gives himself a good talking to one night.

Scotland and Iceland

Scotland and Iceland

Another wee piece from the Yellow Door exhibition:

Iceland is the country that Scotland sometimes yearns to be. Its independent, self-governing, confident chippiness appeals to that part of the Scottish identity which longs to tell the rest of the world how unique we are.

Its austere northern beauty chimes with those parts of our country which lift us to the best of ourselves.

Its creativity is unembarrasedly original. A bit like our own.

Its weather makes ours seem tropical!

And when we stand on the beaches of Sutherland, or the Isle of Lewis, or Shetland, or Orkney – it’s Iceland which is in our mind’s eye’s shouting distance. And we smile back at our near neighbour across the ever-changing Atlantic Sea.
